Thank you for helping us honor Major General Buskirk by contributing to his lasting legacy in support of Ivy Tech Indianapolis student veterans achieving their goals of higher education.
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our great friend, colleague, National Treasurer of the American Legion, and retired Army National Guard, Major General George A. Buskirk Jr., who passed away on October 8, 2019.
George lived a full life, having served his country during the Vietnam War; receiving his bachelor’s degree from Butler University, followed by his law degree from the Indiana University School of Law. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association, where he served as President.
Major General Buskirk served on the Ivy Tech Foundation Board of Directors for close to 15 years and played a major role in developing The Ivy Tech Foundation investment strategy and was a trusted adviser to Foundation president, John Murphy. Additionally, he played a lead role in assisting our military veterans in achieving an education at Ivy Tech.
Not only did “our General” serve with distinction on our board, but he served on St. Mary’s Charities Foundation, as well as being an officer for Boy Scouts of America of Central Indiana, the Indiana War Memorial Commission and Foundation, the Day Nursery Foundation of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Humane Society, the American Red Cross of Central Indiana, and the Indianapolis Veterans Day Council. He was an active member in his community and was honored by having a street named after him in 2015 in Lawrence Township.
We are all very saddened by the loss of this wonderful individual. We should cherish the time we had with George. His memory will live on through his three children and five grandchildren. Ivy Tech Central Indiana would like to honor General Buskirk by naming the Indianapolis Campus veterans resource center in his name, which will now be called the Major General George A. Buskirk Jr. Veterans Resource Center.
